💡 Tips
- Use a 4x4 vehicle as the climb to the Roça involves steep and often slippery cobblestones.
- Ask for a tour of the active cocoa processing units to see the entire process from fruit to bean.
- Respect the privacy of residents living in the former plantation buildings and ask before taking photos.
- Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, as the stones can be extremely slippery due to high humidity.
- Bring plenty of water and insect repellent, as the hinterland is very humid and there are no kiosks.

Uba Budo is a remote settlement in the hilly hinterland of the Cantagalo district, embedded in the dense rainforest that extends along the eastern flanks of Pico de São Tomé. The village lies on the edge of Obô Natural Park, one of the most biologically rich protected areas in the Atlantic, home to several endemic bird species, giant snails and rare orchids. Historically, Uba Budo is closely connected with Roça Uba Budo, a former cocoa and pepper plantation from the late nineteenth century whose distinctive administrative building, former slave infirmary wing and old water mills are partially preserved. Today, residents live mainly from the cultivation of high-quality black pepper, sold internationally under the name Pimenta de São Tomé, as well as from cocoa, bananas and cassava. The unpaved access road makes the village a quiet, rarely visited destination, well-suited for nature lovers who want to observe birds or begin the ascent of Pico de São Tomé via the eastern route. Uba Budo embodies the tropical and traditional hinterland of the island in its most authentic form.
