Ilhéu Santana (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

Ilhéu Santana is a small, uninhabited rocky islet located approximately 1.5 kilometers off the eastern coast of São Tomé, near the town of Santana. The islet is of volcanic origin and consists of rugged basaltic cliffs that rise steeply from the Atlantic Ocean. Geologically, it is a remnant of a former volcanic vent or lava flow that has withstood marine erosion. Despite its small size, the islet is an ecologically valuable site, serving as a nesting ground for various seabirds, including sooty terns and boobies. The waters surrounding Ilhéu Santana are known for their rich marine biodiversity, offering excellent diving and fishing opportunities. Underwater, one can find fascinating rock formations, caves, and a multitude of reef fish. The islet is clearly visible from the mainland and shapes the panorama of the Santana Bay. It is occasionally visited by local fishermen but otherwise remains a pristine natural monument. The protection of the islet and its waters is part of regional efforts to conserve the marine resources of São Tomé and Príncipe.
