Orchids bloom mainly from October to March, making this the best time to visit the Cantagalo garden. In the remaining months fewer flowers are visible, but the evergreen foliage still provides a lush backdrop.
Best time of day
Early morning is handy for photographing orchids in the soft morning light. Later in the morning it often becomes hot and humid, making the flowers less photogenic - plan your visit early.
Etiquette
Do not touch the orchids as the delicate flowers are easily damaged. Photography is allowed, but without flash and without bending or moving the plants.
What to bring
A camera with a macro lens is convenient for capturing fine details of orchid flowers. Comfortable, light clothing and a hat against the tropical sun are recommended.

Cantagalo Orchid Garden is in the heart of Cantagalo district on São Tomé, about one hour's drive from the capital São Tomé. The garden is reachable by taxi or rental car; roads are partly unpaved.
