Roça Santa Cecília

Roça Santa Cecília is one of the smaller, often forgotten plantations of São Tomé. Its history, though less documented than that of the large Roças, is nevertheless important for understanding the colonial agricultural system. Founded in the late 19th or early 20th century, it was likely a satellite plantation or a smaller independent operation that produced cocoa for export. Life at Santa Cecília was simple and hard. The infrastructure was limited to the bare essentials: simple workers' huts, a drying area for the cocoa, and perhaps a small administrative building. There was none of the luxury found in the main houses of the great plantation owners. After independence, the fate of small operations like Santa Cecília was quickly sealed. Without the logistical and financial support of the colonial system, they were not viable. Today, the remains are little more than a few foundations overgrown with vegetation. They are a silent reminder of the countless small cogs in the machinery of the cocoa economy and the lives of the anonymous workers who operated them.
