Monte Café is one of São Tomé's most famous historic roças, lying in the Mé-Zóchi district at around 700 meters elevation in the cloud mountains of the interior. The plantation was founded in 1858 by Portuguese entrepreneur João Maria de Sousa e Almeida, the future Baron of Água-Izé, and quickly became the most important coffee roça of the entire Portuguese colonial world. At its peak around 1900, Monte Café produced top-quality Arabica and Robusta coffee, exported to Lisbon, Hamburg and London. The imposing manor houses, the chapel, the hospital, the drying terraces and the hydroelectric plant testify to the industrial scale of the era. Today, the complex houses the Museu do Café, documenting the history of coffee culture on the island, as well as a small revived manufactory marketing specialty coffee under the „Café Monte Café“ brand. Tourists can visit the old facilities, take part in tastings and hike to waterfalls and viewpoints that reveal the dramatic panorama of the São Toméan highlands.
