Bombom is a lively town in the Mé-Zóchi district on the eastern edge of São Tomé's midlands, strategically located on the connecting road between Trindade and the capital. Its name, Portuguese for „candy“, is said in local tradition to refer to the sweet taste of breadfruit and bananas grown here. Throughout the 20th century, Bombom evolved from a purely agricultural village into a small trade and craft center with carpenters, tailors and wood-carvers producing typical São Toméan masks, drums and furniture. At the Sunday market, farmers from surrounding villages meet traders from the capital; offerings range from matabala and banana-pão to fresh fish and modern consumer goods. Bombom is also home to a small but active artist community creating contemporary art around questions of São Toméan identity, gender equality and environmental issues, often in self-organized galleries and workshops.
