💡 Tips
- Use the shared yellow taxis that gather at the main road intersections; they are the most authentic and cheapest way to get around.
- Carry local currency (Dobra) in small denominations, as getting change for large bills from street vendors can be difficult.
- Weather changes quickly; carry a light rain jacket even if the day starts sunny.
- Learn a few basic greetings in Portuguese or the local Forro creole to quickly gain the respect of the friendly locals.
- Tap water is not recommended for drinking; always buy bottled water from local grocery stores.

Buy fresh jackfruit, papaya, and sweet bananas directly from roadside stalls.

Caixão Grande lies in the Mé-Zóchi district at a central transport hub of São Tomé's midlands and, despite its macabre name, „big coffin“, said to refer to the shape of a nearby valley, is a lively, cheerful village. Its location at the crossroads of the routes to Trindade, Bombom, Madalena and Almas has made Caixão Grande one of the most important transshipment points for agricultural goods between the island's north and south. Here, hill farmers unload tomatoes, cabbage, avocados, sweet potatoes and bananas which are then driven by pickup trucks to the capital. Caixão Grande is also known for its lively music scene: local puita and dêxa groups perform at festivals, and a few self-built recording studios produce Africanized pop music. The fields surrounding the town are among the most productive vegetable gardens on the island, with fertile black soil yielding fresh produce year-round for the markets of São Tomé and Trindade.
