Pico Carvalhal (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

Pico Carvalhal is a significant mountain in the heart of the Mé-Zóchi district on São Tomé, a region historically known for its productive coffee plantations. The mountain itself is an extinct volcano whose slopes are covered with fertile, mineral-rich soil. While the lower slopes are still partly used for agriculture, especially for growing shade coffee, the upper regions are once again covered by forest. This forest is a mixture of secondary forest and remnants of the original cloud forest. Pico Carvalhal is an important water reservoir, supplying water to the surrounding communities and agricultural lands. Hikes in this area often lead through old roças (plantations) and offer insights into the colonial history as well as the impressive nature of the island.
