Water temperature…
Ribeira Afonso is a small, characterful coastal community in the south of the Cantagalo district, located precisely where the river of the same name flows through a wide estuary into the Atlantic. The black volcanic-sand bay is framed by steep, densely wooded slopes, on which banana plants, breadfruit trees and cocoa plantations cling. Historically, Ribeira Afonso was an important loading point for cocoa from the surrounding plantations such as Água Izé and Ribeira Peixe, from where it was shipped by boat to the capital. Old drying facilities and warehouses still bear witness to this past. The village lives from fishing, a modest cocoa trade and increasingly from gentle tourism, because the powerful surf at the river mouth attracts experienced surfers, while natural pools formed at low tide offer safe bathing for families. A small church, a health post and a primary school form the social center. Visiting Ribeira Afonso means experiencing authentic southern São Tomé in its unembellished, nature-driven form.
