Roça Água Izé (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

Roça Água Izé, founded in the 19th century, was one of the largest and most influential cocoa plantations on São Tomé. It was a microcosm of the colonial plantation economy, with a complex infrastructure that included a main house (Casa Principal), workers' quarters (Sanzalas), a hospital, and a railway line to transport cocoa beans. The hospital, still in operation, was one of the most modern in the region at the time, testifying to the Roça's importance. The history of Água Izé is inseparable from the exploitation of contracted laborers (serviçais) from Angola, Mozambique, and Cape Verde, whose harsh living and working conditions led to numerous revolts. After independence in 1975, the plantation was nationalized, but production declined dramatically. Today, the decaying buildings are a haunting monument to the rise and fall of the cocoa empire and the complex social history of São Tomé and Príncipe.
