Praia Melão lies on the southern coast of the Água Grande district, only a few kilometers from the capital São Tomé, at the point where the rugged coastline of the island's north softens into a gentler, palm-lined strip. The town is closely tied to the country's industrial history: here stands the Rosema brewery, one of the few large industrial plants in São Tomé, producing the popular local beer and serving as an important employer for the region. Right next to the brewery stretches a dark volcanic-sand beach lined with coconut palms, almond trees and breadfruit trees. Praia Melão is a favorite destination for locals on weekend outings, picnics and beach football matches, while small wooden boats head out regularly to catch sardines and mackerel. Strategically, this stretch of coast is an important node for local coastal shipping, as cargo barges from here maintain links with smaller ports along the island's shoreline. The mixture of industry, tradition and untamed Atlantic surf makes Praia Melão an unusual and characterful place.
