Bobo Forro is a densely populated and lively neighborhood on the southwestern edge of the capital São Tomé, regarded as the cultural heart of the Forros, the dominant ethnic group of the island. The Forros are descendants of freed slaves and mixed Portuguese settlers and continue to shape the country's social life through their creole language, also called Forro, and music styles such as ússua and socopé. In Bobo Forro, simple yet colorful wooden houses on stilts line dusty alleys, interspersed with kiosks, hair salons, traditional taverns and small meeting squares where drums and guitars sound after dark. The district is also known for its spirited market, where locally grown cassava, yams, plantains and palm oil change hands. Religious processions, carnival parades and football matches on makeshift pitches are part of everyday life. Visiting Bobo Forro means encountering an honest, warm-hearted São Tomé beyond the colonial postcard imagery and gaining a deep insight into the contemporary urban identity of the island.
