Roça Bemposta, located in the northeast of São Tomé island, is another example of the country's rich plantation economy heritage. Founded in the late 19th century, like its counterparts, it focused on the cultivation of cocoa, then considered 'black gold'. The architecture of Roça Bemposta follows the typical pattern, with a stately main house overlooking the workers' quarters (sanzalas), warehouses, and drying platforms. This layout reflected the strict social hierarchy of the colonial era. The plantation's history is marked by the hard labor of the contract workers (serviçais) and the enormous profits generated for the Portuguese owners. After independence in 1975, the Roça was nationalized and, like many others, experienced a decline in production and subsequent decay.
