💡 Tips
- Bring small-denomination Dobra notes, as local vendors and the grogue bars behind the market rarely have change for large bills.
- Use Trindade as a gateway for mountain hikes; the air here is significantly cooler and fresher than on the coast.
- Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, as the town's streets are very steep and can become slippery after rain.
- Visit Tia Zeza on Friday afternoons when she grills fresh lobster over coconut shells right by the bridge.
- Head to the local market early in the morning to catch the best selection of fresh jackfruit and safú.

Water temperature…
Trindade is the capital of the Mé-Zóchi district and, by population, São Tomé's second-largest city. It lies on a fertile plateau at about 350 meters elevation, where the climate is markedly milder and the vegetation lusher than on the coastal plain. Already during Portuguese times, Trindade was called the „upper city of cocoa“, as the surrounding roças, including Monte Café, Saudade and Bombaim, delivered their harvests here, making the town the processing and administrative center of the midlands. The tragic Batepá massacre of 3 February 1953, in which the colonial administration killed hundreds of Forros, took place here; that date is now a national day of remembrance. The town houses a major Catholic mission, several secondary schools and the country's teacher training college. Trindade is also famed for its literary tradition with authors such as Francisco José Tenreiro and for the annual Bula-au street theater festival. Travelers heading to the highlands almost always pass through this cool, green and historically charged city.
