Cruzeiro is an elevated residential neighborhood of the capital São Tomé, draped over the gently rising hills behind the city center and offering wide panoramic views of the harbor and the Gulf of Guinea. The district developed after independence in 1975 into a sought-after residential area where modern single-family houses, small embassy residences and some of the country's most important secondary schools now sit side by side. Narrow streets winding up the slope in serpentines, lined with breadfruit, mango and hibiscus trees, give the neighborhood its character. The slightly cooler, fresher air makes Cruzeiro especially attractive during the hottest months, while the nearby Catholic church and several small community squares serve as social meeting points. From the highest points of the district, on clear days, views extend as far as Ilhéu das Cabras island. Cruzeiro thus combines urban infrastructure with a quieter, almost suburban atmosphere in which urban greenery and tropical vegetation shape everyday life.
