This suburban extension of Pantufo grows along the coastal road between the historic fishing-village core and the capital São Tomé and is one of the most dynamic residential areas of the Água Grande district. While the actual village core is still home to traditional fishing families, modern two- to three-story houses, small boutique guesthouses and a series of new beach restaurants attracting international travelers are emerging here. The Pantufo suburban zone is also a culinary address: on weekends, fresh tuna, peixe-espada and shrimp sizzle on charcoal grills right on the beach, accompanied by palm wine and cacharamba. Several initiatives market local crafts, carved masks, coconut-fiber baskets and volcanic-glass jewelry, directly from the workshops to tourists. The transition between tradition and urban modernity thus takes place in a uniquely São Toméan, organic way.
