Santana is the capital of the Cantagalo district on the east coast of São Tomé and lies picturesquely on a bay in the middle of which the famous rocky islet Ilhéu de Santana rises from the turquoise Atlantic. With around six thousand inhabitants, Santana is one of the more populous towns of the country and an important regional center for administration, education and healthcare. The townscape is shaped by pastel-colored single-story houses, a distinctive colonial-era parish church dedicated to Saint Anne, and a lively market square where fish, cassava, bananas and sweet potatoes are sold. Santana is also the starting point for boat trips to the offshore islet, known as a paradise for diving and snorkeling, and for hikes into the hilly hinterland dotted with cocoa plantations. The annual town festival in honor of Saint Anne in July attracts numerous pilgrims and visitors. With its mix of coastal idyll, religious tradition and rural lifestyle, Santana embodies the character of eastern São Tomé in a particular way.
