Almas sits on a gently undulating plateau in the Mé-Zóchi district at around 600 meters elevation and is one of São Tomé's oldest coffee-growing areas. As early as the second half of the 19th century, high-quality Arabica plants were cultivated here, whose beans develop a particularly balanced, chocolatey note thanks to cool nights and volcanic soils. Characteristic of Almas are the old stone houses of former plantation workers, built from dark lava in a mixed West African, Portuguese architectural style that has not survived anywhere else on the island in this form. The name Almas („souls“) recalls the many who lost their lives in the plantation economy and is kept alive in the town through a pronounced spiritual culture: All Souls' celebrations, ancestor rituals and the singing of djambis are part of the yearly cycle. Today, young cooperatives are once again betting on specialty coffee cultivation, marketing it directly to roasteries in Lisbon and Milan.
