Milagrosa lies in the Mé-Zóchi district at around 700 meters elevation and is one of São Tomé's highest permanent settlements. The name, „the miraculous one“, refers to the 19th-century shrine of Nossa Senhora Milagrosa, to which pilgrims from across the country come on feast days. The cool highland air and intense solar radiation make Milagrosa an excellent area for cultivating aromatic black pepper (Piper nigrum), grown here in mixed cultures under the shade of breadfruit and Erithrina trees. Coffee, cardamom and tropical medicinal herbs are also cultivated. The town also gives one of the most spectacular sightlines to Pico de São Tomé (2,024 m), the island's highest peak; on clear days the summit appears directly above the surrounding forests. The religious processions, in which residents descend the mountain with drums, songs and colorful cloths, are among the most striking festivals of the highlands and attract numerous visitors each year.
