- The village is the gateway to the island's interior, making it a great base for exploring nearby coffee estates.
- Ask locals for guided hikes to Lagoa Amélia to ensure you safely find the hidden crater lake.
- Embrace the 'Leve-Leve' lifestyle; everything moves slower here, so don't rush the small shopkeepers.

Madalena is a quiet suburb of the district capital Trindade in the Mé-Zóchi district, set between the midland plateau and the first foothills of São Tomé's northern mountain region. The town owes its name to a small chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene built by plantation workers in the 19th century and maintained to this day. Madalena is part of the island's traditional spice landscape: in shaded mixed cultures under breadfruit and cocoa trees, high-quality cloves, cinnamon, pepper and nutmeg grow, dried in small quantities for premium export. Local families preserve many traditional São Toméan recipes, such as calulu de peixe or blablá, prepared with home-garden ingredients. Hikers traversing the highlands between Trindade and Santo Amaro find quiet paths through dense mixed forest here, small streams and viewpoints with wide vistas across surrounding cocoa forests and distant volcanic peaks.
