Pantufo (Coast) is the immediate beach and harbor zone of the historic Pantufo village in the Água Grande district and defines the maritime face of the São Tomé capital region. At dawn, the first colorful pirogues set out, and the black volcanic sand fills with arriving catches, tuna, wahoo, voador (flying fish) and the famous peixe-espada. Behind the beach line stretch small open-air boatyards where the typical clinker-built pirogues made from pau-rio and muxoxo wood are repaired. In the evening, the beach turns into a lively market with charcoal grills: women lay fresh fish on clay grills, accompanied by cassava funge, banana-pão and palm wine. The boat lights, the sparkle of the Atlantic and the silhouette of the capital make the place one of the most beautiful backdrops for maritime photography in São Tomé.
