Muerzzuschlag is situated in northeastern Styria on the upper reaches of the Muerz and looks back on a multifaceted history. The town gained worldwide fame when the first skiing attempts in the Alps were made here at the end of the 19th century, earning Muerzzuschlag the title of Cradle of Winter Sports. Another milestone in urban development was the opening of the Semmering Railway in 1854, which, as the world's first mountain railway, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and directly connected the town to Vienna. Culturally, Muerzzuschlag is inseparably linked to Johannes Brahms, who composed his Fourth Symphony here; the Brahms Museum in the composer's former residence is now an international attraction. For decades, the town was also a significant center of the iron and steel industry, with the Boehler plant significantly shaping the local economy. Today, the town presents itself as a modern service center with a strong focus on cultural tourism and sports history. The Winter Sport Museum houses one of the world's most extensive collections on the subject of skiing. The surrounding mountains of the Fischbach Alps and the Semmering make the region a paradise for hikers and winter sports enthusiasts alike.
