Trofaiach is located in Upper Styria in the Leoben district. The town extends into the wide Trofaiach basin on the Vordernbergerbach stream. Geographically, the town is surrounded by the peaks of the Eisenerz Alps, which gives it a pretty backdrop. Historically, Trofaiach is closely linked to the Styrian Erzberg; for centuries it served as an important supply and trading post for the mining industry. The architecture in the town center still shows traces of the old iron merchant houses and cast-iron details today. The parish church of Saint Rupert is an important building with Romanesque origins. Economically, the town has developed into a modern residential location, while its proximity to the industrial centers of Leoben and Donawitz provides jobs. Trofaiach has gained in importance in recent years through municipal mergers. Demographically, the city is an important regional center with a comprehensive infrastructure for education and health. Cultural life is characterized by clubs and events that often uphold mining traditions, such as the annual horse riders meeting or the Barbara celebrations.
