Riegersburg Castle (Austria)

Weather…

Riegersburg Castle stands imposingly atop a 482-meter-high basalt rock in Eastern Styria and was regarded as the strongest fortress of Christendom against threats from the East. Its origins date back to the 11th century, but it reached its strategic peak in the 17th century under the legendary Baroness Katharina Elisabeth von Wechsler, known as the 'Gallerin'. The complex is surrounded by three kilometers of defensive walls, eleven bastions, and seven gates, making it impregnable for centuries. Within the walls are magnificent state rooms from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, as well as museums focusing on the history of witch trials and life at the castle. Since 1822, Riegersburg has been owned by the House of Liechtenstein, which ensures the preservation of this monumental monument. A modern inclined elevator now provides convenient access to the castle plateau, which also houses a bird of prey sanctuary.
