Voitsberg is the capital of the district of the same name in West Styria, located approximately 20 kilometers west of Graz. The city was founded in the 12th century under the protection of Obervoitsberg Castle, whose ruins still tower majestically over the town center and serve as a venue for events. For a long period, Voitsberg was defined by lignite mining in the nearby district, which brought economic prosperity to the region during the 20th century. Following the end of mining operations, the city underwent a successful structural transformation into a center for services and industry. A cultural highlight is the town hall facade, artistically designed by Arik Brauer and regarded as a masterpiece of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. The surrounding area of Voitsberg is closely linked to Lipizzaner horse breeding, as the world-famous Piber Federal Stud is located just a few kilometers away. Voitsberg combines industrial history with modern urban development and provides a high quality of life through the rolling hills of the West Styrian landscape.
