Historically, the area was inhabited as far back as Roman times, as evidenced by various local archaeological finds. Gleisdorf was first documented in 1229 and steadily grew into an essential market center for the region. A modern landmark of the city is the Solar Tree in the town center, symbolizing the community's pioneering role in renewable energy adoption. The neo-Gothic parish church and the historic town hall are the primary architectural features of the city center. Additionally, Gleisdorf is situated along the Styrian Apple Road, highlighting the local importance of fruit farming.
