Green Lake (Austria)

Weather…

Green Lake, located in the municipality of Tragöß in Styria, is a unique karst lake situated at the foot of the Hochschwab mountains. Each spring, the lake basin fills with crystal-clear snowmelt from the surrounding limestone peaks, flooding the meadows and hiking trails of the valley floor. During this period, benches and footbridges can be found several meters underwater, creating a surreal submerged landscape that gained international fame. The lake's distinctive emerald green color is a result of the pure water and the submerged green vegetation. Since it is entirely dependent on snowmelt, the water level fluctuates dramatically throughout the year, peaking in early June and nearly disappearing by late autumn. To preserve the delicate ecological balance and the clarity of the water, a total ban on diving, swimming, and boating was implemented in 2016, ensuring that the site remains a protected natural monument.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The Grüner See is typically accessed from the village of Tragöß, often serving as the starting point for visitors heading into the Hochschwab mountains. A well-marked trail usually leads directly from the valley up to the alpine lake.
📅
Best season
Spring and early summer are usually the best times to visit when the snowmelt raises the water levels, creating its famous crystal-clear green appearance. Winter months can bring heavy snow, making the trails much harder to navigate.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The surrounding paths are generally well-maintained and mostly flat near the water, though the wider region features rugged alpine terrain. Exploring the higher trails requires a good level of fitness and surefootedness.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended for the rocky alpine paths, along with layered clothing to adapt to sudden temperature changes. Bringing a reliable rain jacket and sufficient drinking water is always a good practice here.
🅿️
Parking
Dedicated visitor parking is typically available near the edge of Tragöß, acting as a trailhead for the walk to the lake. During peak season, arriving early is advisable as these parking areas can fill up relatively quickly.
⚠️
Safety
Keep in mind that swimming is usually prohibited to protect the fragile ecosystem of this unique body of water. Stay on the marked trails to avoid accidents on the steep mountain slopes and always check local weather updates.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical visit to simply walk around the immediate lake area generally takes about one to two hours of easy strolling. Those venturing further up into the Hochschwab mountains should comfortably allocate a half or full day.
