Hohe Veitsch (Austria)

Weather…

The Hohe Veitsch is the highest peak of the Mürzsteg Alps in the Austrian state of Styria. Reaching an elevation of 1,981 meters, it forms a prominent limestone plateau that drops steeply to the south towards the village of Veitsch and the Mürz Valley. The geological structure primarily consists of Wetterstein limestone, characterized by karst features such as sinkholes and cave systems. A significant cultural landmark is the Graf-Meran-Haus, a mountain hut located at 1,836 meters, built in 1885, which serves as a vital base for hikers. The Hohe Veitsch is also an important destination for pilgrims, as the Vienna pilgrimage route to Mariazell crosses the plateau. During the winter months, the region provides a family-friendly ski resort on the northeastern slopes near Brunnalm. The flora includes rare alpine flowers like the mountain cowslip, while the high plateau landscape is intensively used as alpine pasture in the summer.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The Hohe Veitsch in the Mürzsteg Alps is usually reached via well-marked hiking trails from the surrounding valleys, such as the Brunnalm. The drive to the starting points is mostly via regional pass roads in Styria.
📅
Best season
The classic hiking season for this mountain generally extends from late May to October when the alpine pastures are in full bloom. In winter, the flanks transform into a popular destination for snowshoe and ski tourers.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain often begins with gentle, green alpine meadows and becomes increasingly rocky and steep towards the summit cross. The marked paths are mostly well-maintained but demand solid surefootedness in the upper third.
🎒
What to bring
Classic hiking boots with a good tread are generally perfectly adequate for the varied terrain. Due to the lack of trees at the summit, a windproof jacket is a very important piece of equipment even on warm summer days.
🅿️
Parking
At the starting points, especially around the Brunnalm, visitors typically find large parking areas that serve as a base in summer. An early start helps avoid the heat during the ascent and allows for relaxed parking.
⚠️
Safety
As in the entire Eastern Alps, hikers here must anticipate rapidly approaching summer thunderstorms, which require a timely turn-back. At some ridge points, caution should also be exercised regarding grazing cattle and slippery grass.
⏱️
Time needed
For the ascent and subsequent descent, hikers should generally plan for a relaxed half to three-quarter day. A stop at the Graf-Meran-Haus near the summit pleasantly extends the tour.
