Leoben is the second-largest city in Styria and is internationally recognized as a center for mining industry and tradition. Located on a prominent bend of the Mur River, the city is home to the University of Leoben, one of the world's leading educational and research institutions for mining and metallurgy. Historically, Leoben gained significance through the Preliminary Peace of Leoben in 1797, negotiated between Napoleon Bonaparte and the Habsburgs. The city's most recognizable landmark is the Schwammerlturm, a 13th-century city gate named for its characteristic mushroom-shaped roof. In addition to heavy industry, such as the Voestalpine steel plant in Donawitz, Leoben is famous for its brewing heritage, particularly the Gösser Brewery in the Göss district. The blend of industrial prowess and historical charm establishes Leoben as a unique urban center in Upper Styria.
