Mariazell (Austria)

Weather…

Mariazell is located in the Styrian Salzkammergut at an altitude of 868 meters and has been Austria's spiritual center for centuries. The Basilica of Mariazell, with its unique facade, a Gothic spire flanked by two Baroque towers, houses the wooden miraculous statue of "Magna Mater Austriae." Its founding dates back to 1157, when the monk Magnus built a cell for his statue of Mary. Today, over a million pilgrims visit each year to pray at the Chapel of Miracles. A particularly impressive way to arrive is via the Mariazellerbahn, a historic narrow-gauge railway that winds 84 kilometers from St. Pölten through spectacular mountain scenery. In addition to its religious significance, Mariazell is a favorite destination for nature lovers. The Bürgeralpe, the local mountain, is accessible by cable car and gives the "Holzknechtland" adventure park in summer and a compact ski area in winter. Just a few kilometers away lies the crystal-clear Erlaufsee, well-suited for swimming and diving in summer. Culinarilly, Mariazell is world-famous for its gingerbread (Lebkuchen), still made in traditional shops like Pirker according to secret recipes, and for the Mariazeller stomach bitters. During Advent, the town transforms into an atmospheric Christmas world featuring the world's largest hanging Advent wreath. Access is possible from Vienna or Graz in about two hours.
