Riegersburg Castle (Austria)

Weather…

Riegersburg Castle stands defiantly atop a 482-meter-high dormant volcanic cone, a dark basalt monolith that has dominated the Styrian landscape for nearly a millennium. Often referred to as the strongest fortress in Christendom, it was never conquered during the Ottoman wars, thanks to its formidable defensive system consisting of seven gates, eleven bastions, and over three kilometers of massive stone walls. The castle's history is inextricably linked to Elisabeth Katharina von Wechsler, known as the Gallerin, a powerful and controversial 17th-century noblewoman who successfully expanded the fortress and defied social norms of her time. Today, the interior houses a chillingly detailed museum dedicated to the Great Styrian Witch Trials, which were among the most extensive in Central Europe during the late Middle Ages. Visitors can also explore the magnificent White Room and the Knight's Hall, which features intricate wood carvings and ceiling paintings reflecting the wealth of the Liechtenstein family, who have owned the castle since 1822. The ascent to the fortress can be made via a modern panoramic cable car or a challenging via ferrata for adventurers, offering wide-open views of the rolling vineyards and forests of the Styrian Vulkanland. A bird of prey station adds another layer of historical immersion, showcasing traditional falconry techniques that have been practiced in the region for centuries.
