The Radstadt Tauern form a prominent mountain group within the Lower Tauern in the Austrian state of Salzburg. They extend between the Enns Valley to the north and the Lungau region to the south, where the Radstadt Tauern Pass at 1,738 meters represents a historically strategic connection. The geological composition is diverse, including crystalline rocks like quartz phyllite as well as localized limestone deposits, resulting in a varied flora. The highest peak of the group is the Weißeck, reaching an elevation of 2,711 meters, offering expansive views over the High Tauern. Since Roman times, the mountain pass has been used intensively, evidenced by milestones found along the ancient road. In modern times, the region has developed into a premier winter sports center, particularly around the resort of Obertauern, renowned for its snow reliability. The ecological significance is manifested in the high moors and mountain lakes that serve as habitats for endangered animal species such as the black grouse.
