Schafberg is a 1,783-meter mountain in the Salzkammergut region, positioned on the border between the states of Salzburg and Upper Austria. It is world-renowned for its dramatic north face, which drops steeply toward Lake Mondsee, contrasted by gentler southern slopes facing Lake Wolfgangsee. Tourism accelerated in 1893 with the opening of the Schafbergbahn, Austria's steepest cog railway, which continues to be a primary attraction for visitors. The summit is home to the Schafbergspitze Hotel, established in 1862 as one of the country's earliest mountain hotels. Geologically, the Schafberg is composed of Dachstein limestone and contains significant fossils dating back to the Tethys Ocean period. The summit panorama is widely regarded as one of the best in the Eastern Alps, with up to 13 Salzkammergut lakes visible on a clear day.
