Hauser Kaibling is a 2,015-meter mountain in Styria, serving as the eastern gateway to the renowned Schladming 4-Mountain Ski Area. Part of the Schladminger Tauern range, it is a significant tourism hub for the Enns Valley in both winter and summer. Geologically, the mountain is composed of metamorphic rocks such as quartz phyllite, contrasting with the sheer limestone faces of the Dachstein to the north. A unique feature of the mountain is the summer grazing of approximately 800 sheep, which act as ecological 'lawnmowers' to maintain the ski slopes. The summit provides one of the premier viewpoints for observing the Dachstein's massive South Face and the surrounding valley. Historically, the mountain's modern development began with the first cable cars in the 1950s, shifting the economy from alpine farming to international skiing. During the summer, Hauser Kaibling gives themed hiking trails and Europe's highest-altitude sheep-themed adventure park.

Getting there
Access to this significant ski mountain in the Schladming Tauern is excellently developed and mostly happens directly from the Ennstal. In winter and summer, modern cable cars transport guests directly from the valley stations to the heights.
Best season
The mountain experiences two distinct main seasons: the snow-sure winter for skiers from December to April and the summer for hikers. The shoulder seasons are typically used for maintenance work on the ski lifts.
Terrain & paths
In winter, perfectly groomed pistes of varying difficulty levels dominate the landscape. As soon as the snow melts, the slopes reveal a vast network of gentle alpine paths, forestry roads, and stony summit trails.
What to bring
While classic alpine ski gear, including a helmet and cold protection, is mandatory in winter, summer guests only need comfortable hiking boots. However, flexible rain protection and sunscreen should be included in every season.
Parking
Due to its tourist importance, the valley station features gigantic, terraced parking lots for thousands of vehicles. These are usually free for day guests and ensure a short walk to the ticket offices.
Safety
In the secured ski area, ski patrols ensure safety, but off-piste there is always an avalanche risk not to be underestimated. In summer, on hot days, it is particularly important to ensure sufficient shade breaks and hydration.
