Tamsweg

Tamsweg is the historical, cultural, and economic center of Salzburg's Lungau region. Situated at 1,024 meters above sea level in a sunny basin, it has one of Austria's most beautiful market squares, lined with magnificent burgher houses. A special feature of Tamsweg is its living tradition: the annual Samson parade, where a giant figure over five meters tall is carried through the town, is part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage. An architectural jewel is the pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard, which sits on a hill overlooking the town. With its original 15th-century stained glass windows, it is considered one of the most significant late Gothic churches in the Alps. For nature lovers, the surroundings of Tamsweg offer numerous opportunities. Lake Preber (Prebersee) is a popular destination, famous for the traditional 'Preber shooting' at water targets, which is unique in the world. In winter, Tamsweg serves as a good starting point for the nearby ski resorts of Fanningberg, Großeck-Speiereck, and Obertauern. The region is also a paradise for cross-country skiers and ski tourers. Lungau cuisine is known for its down-to-earth specialties like the 'Lungauer Eachtling' (potato).
