💡 Tips
- The Zell am See-Kaprun Summer Card is often included with hotels and saves a lot of money on cable cars and boat trips.
- Take the Schmittenhöhe cable car in the late afternoon to catch the best golden hour light over the lake.
- The lake promenade is a great biking path, but be very mindful of pedestrians when riding near the town center.
- Parking in the center is limited and pricey. It's best to use the dedicated parking garages or Park & Ride facilities.
🍽 Food
A hearty local dish of cheese noodles baked in a cast-iron pan. Find it in traditional taverns near the lake.
Try the local whitefish (Renke) caught directly from Lake Zell at the restaurants situated along the promenade.
A giant, sweet, fluffy soufflé. It's very filling, so it's best shared between two people at a classic Austrian cafe.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Visit the Stadtplatz on Friday mornings to buy regional cheese, honey, and fresh farmhouse bread.
Explore the car-free streets around the historic town square for traditional Austrian clothing and souvenirs.
This lakeside park is first-rate for a peaceful morning stroll before the daytime crowds arrive.
Head to the village on the opposite side of the lake for a much quieter perspective and beautiful afternoon sun.

Zell am See is one of Austria's most pleasant small towns, picturesquely situated between Lake Zell and the Schmittenhöhe mountain. The historic center, featuring the Vogtturm tower and the town parish church, invites visitors for a stroll. The town is world-renowned for its location, which makes it possible to ski on the Kitzsteinhorn in the morning and swim in the crystal-clear lake in the afternoon. In winter, the Schmittenhöhe features family-friendly slopes and one of the best views of over thirty three-thousand-meter peaks. In summer, the lake takes center stage: boat trips, stand-up paddling, and swimming are part of the standard activities. Hikers find numerous routes on the surrounding alpine meadows. A drive on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, which starts nearby, is a must for every visitor. Regional cuisine gives delicacies such as Pinzgauer Kasnocken. Zell am See has an excellent rail connection, directly linked to Salzburg. The best time to visit is summer (July/August) for lake activities and winter (January to March) for skiing fun. The 'Zeller Seezauber' light show in summer is a popular evening attraction.
