Gosau Lake (Austria)

Weather…

The Gosau Lakes (Gosauseen) are a group of three alpine lakes in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria, comprising the Vorderer Gosausee, Gosaulacke, and Hinterer Gosausee. Situated at the base of the massive Dachstein mountains, the lakes offer one of the most famous panoramic views in the Alps, with the Dachstein Glacier reflecting in the clear waters. The Vorderer Gosausee was formed by a prehistoric rockfall and is currently used for hydroelectric power generation. The water in the lakes is of drinking-quality purity and supports a healthy population of fish species like trout and char. The entire area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut region. Hiking trails surround the lakes, providing spectacular views of the jagged limestone peaks of the Gosaukamm range. Geologically, the landscape was carved by glacial erosion during the Ice Ages, creating the deep valleys and steep rock formations that attract mountaineers from around the globe.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The journey to this pretty alpine lake in the Dachstein Mountains usually follows well-developed regional roads to the very end of the Gosau valley in Upper Austria. From the marked transit points in the valley, the clear shores of the front lake can be reached almost immediately via comfortable footpaths.
📅
Best season
The warmer months from late spring deep into autumn are convenient for walking around the water and marveling at the imposing Dachstein glaciers. In the harsh winter, the valley area often transforms into a quiet, deeply snow-covered landscape with partially frozen edges along the shore.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The main trail circling directly around the front Gosau Lake is largely flat, paved, and excellently accessible for families and various fitness levels. Those who venture further up towards the rocky alpine sections of the Dachstein massif must naturally anticipate significantly steeper paths.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable leisure shoes are entirely sufficient for the cozy main loop along the shore, while sturdy mountain boots absolutely must be worn for the demanding high-altitude trails. Since the mountain climate can be very brisk, packing an extra warm layer is always a smart and prudent decision.
🅿️
Parking
Expansive public parking areas are typically located just a very short stroll away from the shore, at the uppermost end of the drivable valley road. Due to the massive popularity of the clear mountain lake, a very early arrival or the use of local buses is strongly recommended in the summer.
⚠️
Safety
To protect the fragile alpine ecosystem and avoid unstable rocky shore sections, it is important to strictly remain on the officially designated hiking trails. The water is often extremely cold even in midsummer, which is why caution is advised when swimming due to the risk of thermal shock.
⏱️
Time needed
A slow and relaxed lap around the main front lake usually takes about one to two hours, offering plenty of time for beautiful landscape photography. However, anyone planning to also head for higher destinations within the Dachstein massif should reserve a full day for the complete excursion.
