💡 Tips
- Visit the famous St. Michael's Basilica early in the morning to beat the large 'Sound of Music' tour groups.
- Park at the designated, paid lots right on the lake shore, as the town center has very limited spaces.
- Explore the pile-dwelling museum to discover the prehistoric history of the region in an interactive way.
- Rent a bike or e-bike; the cycling paths around Lake Mondsee and neighboring Lake Irrsee are excellent.
- The entrance fee to the Alpenseebad is highly worth it for families, offering the largest outdoor pool complex in the Salzkammergut.

The market town of Mondsee is located on the northern shore of the lake of the same name in the Salzkammergut. The town's landmark is St. Michael's Basilica, a magnificent former monastery church that became world-famous through the movie 'The Sound of Music' (the wedding scene). Mondsee features a very long history of settlement; the prehistoric pile dwellings in the lake are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The former Benedictine monastery now houses the local heritage museum and the Pile Dwelling Museum. Lake Mondsee is considered one of the warmest swimming lakes in the Salzkammergut and provides numerous recreational opportunities such as sailing, windsurfing, and hiking up the Drachenwand. Culinarically, the town is known for its spicy Mondsee cheese. Access is particularly convenient and fast from Salzburg via the direct connection to the A1 Westautobahn.
