Werfen (Austria)

Weather…

Werfen is one of the oldest market towns in the Salzburg region, strategically located in the narrow Salzach Valley, about 40 kilometers south of Salzburg. The townscape is dominated by the majestic Hohenwerfen Fortress, perched on a 155-meter-high rocky outcrop. The 11th-century castle is one of Austria's best-preserved fortifications, offering visitors historic tours, an arms exhibition, and spectacular birds of prey demonstrations by the historic falconry center. Film fans often recognize the castle from the Hollywood classic "Where Eagles Dare." The second major highlight is the Eisriesenwelt, the largest interconnected ice cave system on Earth. In a labyrinth of ice palaces and sculptures stretching over 42 kilometers, visitors experience freezing temperatures even in midsummer. The ascent to the cave is made spectacularly with Austria's steepest cable car. For hikers, Werfen provides the "Sound of Music Trail," leading to the original filming locations of the world-famous movie, particularly the meadow where Maria sang with the children. Culinarilly, the town is famous for the "Obauer" restaurant, which ranks among the best gourmet addresses in the country. Werfen is easily accessible by train or via the Tauern highway.
