Lake Wolfgang is one of the most famous lakes in the Salzkammergut region, spanning across the federal states of Salzburg and Upper Austria. With a surface area of approximately 13 square kilometers and a maximum depth of 114 meters, it is a significant body of water in the Limestone Alps. The lake is divided into two basins by the Bürgl peninsula, with the town of St. Wolfgang on the northern shore holding central historical significance as a pilgrimage site. Since the 14th century, pilgrims have traveled to the local church, establishing early tourism in the region. A technical highlight is the Schafbergbahn, a rack railway that has operated since 1893 from St. Wolfgang to the 1,783-meter-high Schafberg peak. The region is also the setting for the famous operetta "The White Horse Inn," which significantly increased its cultural prominence in the 20th century. Today, the lake serves as an important recreational area and a center for water sports.
