Landmark
The Selim Caravanserai stands as a magnificent stone witness to the legendary Silk Road. Built in 1332 by Prince Chesar Orbelian, it provided shelter for weary merchants and their caravans crossing the high Vardenyats Pass. The structure is built from massive basalt blocks and features a beautifully carved portal with animal reliefs, including an ox and a lion. Located at an altitude of 2,410 meters, the site has wide-open views of the rugged Vayots Dzor landscape. The silence of the mountains and the ancient stone halls transport visitors back to the Middle Ages. There are no nearby shops, so it’s best to bring local snacks like dried fruits and wine from the nearby Areni region. The caravanserai is situated on the main road between Martuni and Yeghegnadzor. It is best visited in late spring or summer, as the high mountain pass is often closed during the winter months due to heavy snow.

Visiting
Selim Caravanserai is a well-preserved medieval building at 2410 meters altitude. It can be visited both outside and inside; entry is usually free.
Typical hours
The caravanserai is usually accessible during the day as it is not permanently guarded. There are no fixed opening hours; best visited during daylight hours.
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the building and surroundings. Particularly beautiful are shots of the stone carvings at the portal and the vast mountain landscape.
Time needed
A visit to the caravanserai takes about 30 to 45 minutes as the building is relatively small. However, the journey and the view from the mountain pass make the trip worthwhile.

Getting there
The caravanserai is located on the main road between Yerevan and Martuni, roughly halfway over the Selim Pass. It is easily accessible by car; parking is available.

Stop along the way to enjoy the wild beauty of the landscape - the view from the pass summit is panoramic. Bring warm clothing, as it can be cool at 2400 meters even in summer.
