As one of the most important deposits of precious metals in Armenia, the Sotk gold mine is of enormous economic importance for the entire Gegharkunik Province. It not only creates numerous jobs but is also an essential contributing factor to the national export goods.
Visiting
The active mining area is generally not accessible to regular tourists for safety reasons and due to strict industrial regulations. Interested visitors must be content with observing the extensive outer contours and the busy logistical infrastructure from a safe distance.
Where to view it
A good overview of the enormous dimensions of the open-pit mine can often be gained from the pass roads that wind through the rugged mountain landscape in the area. From these elevations, the characteristic waste dumps and the deep pit can be seen particularly well.

In the rural communities around Vardenis, travelers will mainly find authentic agricultural products such as fresh Armenian cheese, mountain honey, and traditionally baked lavash bread. Commercial tourist souvenirs are rather rare in this strongly industrially influenced region.
