Lake Sevan (Armenia)

Weather…

Lake Sevan is the largest freshwater lake in Armenia and the entire Caucasus region, located in the Gegharkunik Province at an altitude of approximately 1,900 meters above sea level. It is of volcanic origin and is fed by 28 rivers and streams, while only the Hrazdan River flows out of it. The lake is famous for its changing colors, which vary from azure to dark blue depending on the weather conditions. Historically, the lake's water level was much higher, but it dropped significantly during the 20th century due to massive water extraction for hydroelectric power and irrigation. On the Sevan Peninsula stands the significant Sevanavank Monastery, dating back to the 9th century, which serves as a major cultural and religious symbol. Today, Lake Sevan is a central hub for tourism in Armenia, offering numerous beaches, hotels, and opportunities for water sports. It also plays a vital role in the fishing industry and the ecological balance of the nation.
