The Areni wine region in the Vayots Dzor province is a place of immense historical importance for the world of wine. It is home to the Areni-1 cave, where archaeologists discovered the world's oldest known winery, dating back to around 4100 BC. This discovery makes Areni the cradle of viticulture. The region is famous for its eponymous indigenous grape variety, Areni Noir, which is perfectly adapted to the harsh climate and high altitude. Wines made from Areni Noir are known for their deep red color and complex aromas of cherry and spice. Many wineries in the region still practice traditional methods, including fermentation and aging in 'karas', large clay amphorae.
