Sevanavank (Armenia)

Weather…

Sevanavank is a historic monastic complex situated on a peninsula on the northwestern shore of Lake Sevan. Originally founded in 874 by Princess Mariam, the monastery once consisted of three churches, of which Surb Arakelots and Surb Astvatsatsin still stand today. The defining feature of the architecture is the use of black tuff stone, which gives the buildings a stern and venerable appearance. Until the mid-20th century, the monastery was located on an island, but the lowering of the lake's water level turned it into a peninsula. The site has expansive views of Lake Sevan, the largest lake in Armenia, and the surrounding mountain ranges. Sevanavank was for a long time a strict monastic center and today serves as one of the most famous landmarks in the country.
