Yeghegnadzor lies in southern Armenia at around 1,195 metres altitude in Vayots Dzor Province ('Gorge of Sorrow'), about 120 km south-east of Yerevan along the M-2 highway to Iran. The town of some 8,000 inhabitants is the administrative and educational centre of one of Armenia's most sparsely populated yet most spectacular regions, famed for its deep gorges, lofty monasteries and ancient winemaking culture. Only a few kilometres away lies the Areni-1 cave, where archaeologists have uncovered, among other things, the oldest known winery in the world (about 6,100 years old) and a 5,500-year-old leather shoe. Nearby attractions include the dramatic cliffside monastery complex of Noravank set in red rock, the wine-festival village of Areni, the Mozrov cave system and the 5th-century Smbataberd fortress plateau.
