Sevan National Park was established in 1978 to safeguard Lake Sevan, the largest freshwater lake in the Caucasus, and its surrounding fragile ecosystems. Covering an expansive area of approximately 150,000 hectares in the Gegharkunik Province, it encompasses the entire lake surface and significant terrestrial buffer zones. The park serves as a critical habitat for migratory birds and is home to the world's largest breeding colony of the Armenian Gull. Beyond its environmental value, the park contains numerous historical landmarks, most notably the 9th-century Sevanavank Monastery, which overlooks the turquoise waters. Current management focuses on the ecological restoration of the lake's water level, which was drastically reduced during the 20th century due to Soviet-era industrial projects. The park's vegetation consists of alpine meadows and reforested pine belts designed to prevent soil erosion around the lake. Visitors are drawn to the park for its unique blend of high-altitude beaches, birdwatching opportunities, and ancient architectural heritage.

Getting there
The national park surrounds the lake and is easily accessible by major highways departing directly from Yerevan, with regular public buses, marshrutkas, and taxis widely available.
Best season
The warm summer months from June to September are naturally the most popular for swimming and boating, although winters offer a uniquely stark, frozen landscape for photography.
Terrain & paths
The landscape features an enormous alpine lake set at a high altitude, bordered by steep mountain ranges, sandy or pebbly beaches, and remnants of oak and pine forests.
What to bring
Always pack windproof jackets and layered clothing as temperatures can drop suddenly due to the elevation, plus comfortable walking shoes and adequate sun protection.
Parking
Ample parking spaces are readily available near the most famous monasteries like Sevanavank, public beach areas, and various lakeside restaurants located along the main ring road.
Safety
Swimmers should exercise extreme caution as the lake is exceptionally deep and the water can remain shockingly cold even on sunny days, increasing the risk of sudden hypothermia.
Time needed
A standard sightseeing visit driving along the coastline usually takes about half a day, but spending one or two nights allows for a more relaxed exploration of the wider natural area.
