Martuni sits at about 1,927 metres altitude on the southern shore of Lake Sevan in Gegharkunik Province, around 130 km east of Yerevan. The town of about 11,000 inhabitants was re-founded in 1925 by Soviet Armenia and named after the nom de guerre 'Martuni' ('the little one') of the Armenian Bolshevik revolutionary Alexander Miasnikian. It is the administrative centre of a vast district whose villages line the southern shore of Lake Sevan, and the most important hub of the lake's fishing industry, especially for the endemic Sevan trout (ishkhan), whitefish and crayfish. Local sights include the medieval Berdkunk fortress, the 9th-century Vanevan monastery and the high-altitude khachkar field of Tsovak, while harsh upland winters allow ice-walks across frozen lagoons. The economy combines fishing, honey, potato and tobacco farming with a tentative but growing summer beach tourism.
