Dilijan lies in the heavily forested Tavush Province at around 1,500 metres altitude in the valley of the Aghstev River, set within one of Armenia's few national parks, and is famously known as the 'Armenian Switzerland' for its mild climate and dense beech, oak and hornbeam forests. The town of about 16,000 inhabitants developed in the 19th century as a spa and resort built around mineral waters, clean air and sanatoria; asthma patients and holidaymakers from across the Caucasus still come here today. The historic Sharambeyan quarter preserves traditional houses with carved wooden balconies, smithies and craft workshops. Dilijan is also famous for the elite United World College Dilijan (founded 2014), for its summer chamber music festivals, the Mossesian concert hall, the nearby monasteries of Goshavank and Haghartsin, and an extensive network of hiking trails to Parz Lake, Lastiver waterfall and the Tor cable-crossing.
