Patriarchate of Peć (Serbia)

Weather…

The Patriarchate of Peć is an extraordinary complex comprising four churches and has served as the spiritual center of the Serbian Orthodox Church since the 13th century. Located at the entrance to the Rugova Canyon, the site was developed to be the seat of Serbian archbishops and later the patriarchs. The main churches, the Holy Apostles, Saint Demetrius, and the Virgin Hodegetria, are structurally interlinked, creating an architectural ensemble of rare complexity. The fresco cycles inside date from various periods between the 13th and 17th centuries and are regarded as masterpieces of Byzantine art in the Balkans. The complex also houses the sarcophagi of numerous Serbian patriarchs and archbishops, underscoring its historical significance. Since 2004, the Patriarchate has been a UNESCO World Heritage site, and in 2006, it was added to the List of World Heritage in Danger. Despite a turbulent history and ongoing political tensions, it remains an active monastery and a powerful symbol of Serbian cultural continuity.
